New Mystery Novels in Library

Our library has  acquired a new series of five mystery novels by  Julia Spencer-Fleming. The books labeled, "A Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne Mystery," give the reader a  wild ride  into murder and intrigue and small-town upstate New York. In the  first book of the series, Clare, the new Episcopal priest, comes to town just out of the Army. Russ, the  Chief of Police, finds his life entwined with Clare's.

The themes of the books engage the reader because most are timely. However, each book relies on past knowledge of the characters, so it's a good idea to read them in order - check the publishing dates. Ms. Spencer-Fleming has written two more books which we have not yet purchased  because they have not come out in paperback. If any one has them and has finished reading them, please consider donating them to the library.

Recommended Reading

We are seeking donations to purchase books for the All Saints  library.

Bishop Ely has recommended reading "Great Emergence" by Phyllis Tickle.

Lenten Study groups at the Cathedral are  using two books  by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan in their  discussions. One is "The First Paul" wich  examines the  life and letters of  Paul, and "The Last Week"which is about the events of Holy Week.THe latter has been purchased for the library.

St. James is doing a  study on Kate Moorehead's book, "Get Over Yourself; God's Here". Moorehead focuses on Jesus' way of  doing things that ofers a vision for us on the practice of repentance that helps address the ways we separate ourselves from God.

If you visit the Hopkins Book Shop on Cherry Street, there is an excellent display of books on the Gospel of Luke to choose from. I purchased "Luke For Everyone" by N.T.Wright for the library to use for forum discussions. I would like to add "The Gospel of  Luke", by Frederick Schmidt. Both books are part of a series on the gospels that would be good to add to the library.

To donate, make a check payable to All Saints and  put "library on the memo. You may give the check to me or put it on Margaret's desk. If you decide to purchase a  book yourself, please let me know to avoid duplication.

The book club will not hold a  meeting in July.

Our next  selection will be "Sweeping up Glass" by Carolyn Wall. Olivia Cross is dealing with her mother's madness, raising her grandson, Will, whose mother fled to California, and the killing of the wolves of her Big Foley Mountain.

This debut novel is at once  a "haunting mystery, a love story and a powerful rumination of secrets, bigotry, and devotion".

We will meet on Sunday, August 8, at 1:30 PM. Everyone is welcome.
